Finnish pine squirrel lives in our neighborhood. Actually we have three squirrels: two pine squirrels and one brown-tailed squirrel. They visit birds feeding place many times a day and eat a lot of seeds and peanuts. I love to watch them chasing each other up and down along the tree trunk. So far I have seen only male squirrels, so I wonder where are the females.
Finnish squirrels vary on the color. We have black-tailed, brown-tailed and pine squirrels. The black-tailed squirrel is common in Eastern Finland, pine squirrel in Lapland! and the most common brown-tailed squirrel all over the Finland.
Even though pine squirrel usually lives in Lapland, I am quite sure that two squirrels are pine ones. Namely they have red tail and in winter their coat is silver-gray exactly the attributes for pine squirrel. Ear tufts develop during the fall and fall off in the spring. The male and the female resemble each other both in appearance and size.
One day I was coming back from the daily walk and found this beautiful squirrel leaving the feeding place and climbing up to the tree. I was lucky to have my camera with me. The pine squirrel posed like a model for a while and then continued his way.
Here are some photos of Finnish pine squirrel. I hope these photos cheer up your day!

Have a nice day! Let’s enjoy the spring ❤️
Hi Minna.
Wow. Your photos are really amazing. I do love them. You are lucky when having possibility to shoot photos about it. When we lived many years ago in Herunen (near to Rajamäki), we had a in our garden a hare. It was accustomed to us. When going out, it just looked at who came out, it did not make off. Thank you sharing these beautiful photos with us.
Stay safe and healthy!

Thank you Matti! Today the squirrel tried to have as much as possible our cats hair to his mouth. It looked very funny 😊 Take care, Minna

Finnish squirrels are cute! I like their hairy ears. 🙂 Different from North American squirrels. I have them all over my back yard. They are chubby with bushy tails. I try to take pictures of them but I am not quick enough to snap a photo before they dash up the trees. 🙂

Oh it would be so nice to see a North American squirrel! Yesterday one of the squirrels tried to crap bunch of cat hair in her mouth. Unfortunately the hair was stuck in a tree and she tried and tried… 😀 It was so funny!

If I ever get a chance to take photos of squirrels, I will post on my blog for you to see. 🙂 I love squirrels. Some call them bushy-tailed rats. I do not care. I think they are funny and very cute!

Your squirrels are just wonderful–they are like comic-book characters! You mentioned an interest in North American squirrels; here are a couple: https://krikitarts.wordpress.com/2016/09/26/menagerie-monday-1/ and https://krikitarts.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/silly-saturday-severe-scolding/. We live in New Zealand for most of the year, and there are no squirrels here. We miss them dearly!

New Zealand! My dream. Some day I will travel to your facinating country. I have never thought that there are no squirrels in New Zealand. Nice new information 👍

The only native mammals here are bats and seals. Someone introduced Australian possums at some point and they are a terrible problem.

Interesting information, thank you for sharing! Sad to hear about Australian possums. It seems to be that they don’t have any natural enemy to kill it😏
