Latokartanonkoski – in a series of Finnish rapids

Latokartanonkoski is the first rapids in my series of Finnish rapids.

In Finland we have thousands of lakes and rivers, but huge water falls are rare as our country is pretty flat. As we have thousands of rivers, we have also many rapids. One of them is located in Southwest coast of Finland and must say that I fell in love with the Latokartanonkoski at the first sight.

I love the sound and movement of the rapids and in Latokartanonkoski you can experience both very strongly. Rapids fascinate me, especially I enjoy photographing rapidly flowing water with long exposure time. I hope you enjoy my Latokartanonkoski post and the photos.

Latokartanonkoski is highly valued cultural environment

The basic structure of Latokartano’s cultural environment dates back to the Middle Ages and Latokartanonkoski has many signs of settlement and activity from different centuries. As an example the red old house in above picture is an ironworks old office and employee building built in 1820.

Most of the ironworks and mills are located by the rapids. The power of the Latokartanokoskis rapids has been used to run mills, a sawmill, an ironworks, a hammer workshop and a liquor bulb.

The mill was built in 1805 and is nowadays a ruin. You can see a corner of the ruin in the above photo.

Latokartanonkoski is one of the most spectacular rapids in South Finland

Latokartanonkoski is one of the most spectacular rapids on the Southwest coast of Finland. It gets its strength when the Kiskonjoki river falls in Latokartanonkoski for a distance of 17 meters.

The dam was restored to allow fish to migrate in the early 2000s. Nowadays the river is a significant spawning ground for salmon, trout, wader and whitefish.

Kartanonkoski is diverse in terms of its natural values

The Kiskonjoki river is diverse in terms of its natural values and endangered species such as the Thick shelled river mussel also thrive in the river. Other species living in the area are otters, bats, Kingfishers and White throated dipper.

I definitely want to meet Kingfisher some day as it is really colorful and beautiful bird. It is critically endangered in Finland, only 1-15 pairs are estimated to breed in Finland. Birds occasionally try to winter in Finland, but usually with poor results. So next spring I will try to find Kingfisher in Latokartanonkoski!

    1. There are so many colors on the flowing water, but it is now easy to detect when standing by the river. When the movement is slowed down the water looks like silk and has many shades of white and brown. Water, I love it !

    1. Thank you! I hope that too. There are so many species on the verge of extinction and I don’t even want to guess how many species have disappeared from the Earth. Sad 😔

      1. Yes, it is very sad to think of how many species have disappeared, most especially as a result of humanity’s irresponsible disregard for our environment and Mother Earth. 😦
