Snowy trees like cotton buds

In South Finland snowy trees have been rare this winter, mainly it has been raining. I love winter because of the snow and bright sunny days. It is nice to be outside and enjoy the fresh cool air. Also snowy landscape is beautiful and I enjoy to photograph it.

After a snowfall the landscape changes, especially snowy trees are very beautiful. This winter there has been only few days when trees have been covered with snow. Luckily I was able to catch some of those moments with my camera.

During one night storm and cold northwest wind created a great winter landscape. It was wonderful to wake up in a wintery landscape with trees like a cotton ball.

As you can see the lake was unfrozen, actually it has been unfrozen nearly all winter. Birds like goosanders and swans have stayed in Finland whole winter and not left as they usually do. So much is changing because of the climate change…

Apple trees

Near our cottage in Lohja is a large manor house with thousands of apple trees. In spring they bloom white, in summer yellow dandelions invade the grass and in autumn the apples adorn the branches. On this picture they are covered with beautiful white blanket.

This apple tree farm is interesting place as there is really good change to meet also deers and rabbits.

Layers

I like this picture a lot as there are so many different layers: different colors, textures, tall trees, bushes, reed and water. These trees are growing in a small island near our cottage in Lohjanjärvi.

On January we have only few hours of light in Finland. Sun rises at 10 am and sets at 2 pm. This picture was taken at 1 pm and there was just enough light to photograph without a camera stand. I have lighten the middle size tree and darken the sky in Lightroom to get more dynamics into the picture. What you think about it?

  1. Hello MInna.

Happy Memorial Day of the end of the Winter War.

Excellent photos. Seeing these silver trees is always amazing. Congratulations shooting them and many thanks presenting them to us.

I have seen similar phenomena in Mikkeli by the lake Saimaa. Also. in Oulu by the sea. Of course, I have posts of them.

  2. Regards from Sello’s Prisma. We went just after 8 o’clock to our normal Friday shopping. It seemed that people had some kind of panic. Queues were as long as in Christmas. Normally in the morning there are senior citizens and mothers with kids. Now there the majority was people between 30 – 50. They have filled shopping carts brimful and some even more.

The amount of people who used gloves was increased. In addition to me, I noticed 8 other persons wearing gloves! I have been using glove since about five years when shopping. To me this has meant that I have had no flu during these years! Normally people do not realize how much there are bacteria in shopping baskets, shopping cart and on those railings of metro escalators. Now the situation has changed when people has notions of these.

I think that now it is not yet to panic, but we must be careful.

    Matti
