Wood anemone (valkovuokko)

Wood anemone is one of the first flowers I remember from my childhood. I usually collected a big bunch of wood anemones for my mom and grandma on Mother’s Day. And because of those nice memories around Mother’s Day, wood anemone is one of my favorite flowers. It is so elegant and beautiful flower.

Tammisaari – Ekenäs has beautiful nature park Ramsholmen besides charming old town

Tammisaari – Ekenäs is a small Swedish speaking town in Southern Finland. The charming old town of Ekenäs with its wooden houses is spread out by the sea.

Most of the buildings in the old town date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. However, the history of Ekenäs dates back to the 16th century. Namely King Gustav Vaasa of Sweden granted city rights in 1546 to the small fishing village.

Ramsholmen nature park is located near old town. Ramsholmen is about 55 hectare and its flora and fauna is so diverse that anything similar is hardly found elsewhere in our country. I have seen f.e. roe deers, Gray herons, at least 11 White-tailed Eagles, many Woodpeckers there.

In the spring, when the wood anemones begin to bloom, the area turns into one big sea of flowers.

It is nice to walk in the park as there is a huge number of different trees like wych elm, ash, black alder, mountain currant, red-berried elder, bird cherry, fly honeysuckle, European larch and English oak, white elm, hazel, horse chestnut, small-leaved linden and rowan. There are even 35 m tall trees!

Yellow wood anemone is also growing in Ramsholmen

One year ago I visited Ramsholmen park for the first time. I saw yellow flowers growing among white wood anemone. I was so exited to see those yellow ones as I had never seen yellow wood anemone before. This year I returned with my camera to photograph both white and yellow wood anemones.

Yellow and white wood anemone are usually growing together.
Anemone ranunculoides (yellow anemone) is modest plant and usually grows together with wood anemone

Yellow wood anemone is pretty rear in Finland and it grows naturally only in Åland (Ahvenanmaa) and in hardwood forest in Southern part of Finland. Ramsholmen is one of those forest where the yellow wood anemone can be found.

Thank you for visiting my blog! I hope you have enjoyed my photographs from Ramsholmen.

Have a great day,

Minna 😊
